What IWC is known for in their higher end watches that well for over $10,000 is their in house pellaton winding system. Most of the watch manufacturers in the world do not make their movements in house, rather it is outsourced by purchasing movements by a company called ETA or Miyota. The ones who create in house movements are the ones who have a heart and soul in their timepieces, as well as engineering prowess to compare whose dick is bigger.
IWC's pellaton movement is unlike any conventional winding system because it uses two sets of teeth to wind the main spring using a obscure shaped bumper to drive the action as the rotor moved. Look at the figure below for a reference.
When actually put into a watch, it looks like blow. IWC adds a 21K gold insignia/emblem onto the rotor to add weigh so where you wear it on your wrist, the weigh on the outside causes it to move more freely. The lever you see right above it is what does that moving and rocking, thus moving the claw and winding up the main spring.
The one pitfall of the movement is that it runs a bit fast, so it is not COSC certified (about +6 to +12 is normal) but the beauty outweighs the slight mis-accuracy. I mean, who is to complain if it is off a few seconds a day anyway?
